DESCRIPTION The high-pressure direct injection fuel system consists of a spill control valve, check valve, fuel relief valve, fuel pressure sensor (for high pressure side), fuel pump assembly (for high pressure side) and direct fuel injector assemblies. The spill control valve adjusts the return volume of high-pressure fuel. The check valve mechanically opens and closes the path to the fuel delivery pipe. The relief valve releases the fuel back to the fuel tank if there is a malfunction in the high-pressure fuel system. The fuel pump assembly (for high pressure side) is installed to the cylinder head cover and operated by a cam installed to the end of the exhaust camshaft. Rotation of the camshaft moves the pump plunger inside the fuel pump assembly (for high pressure side) up and down, pressurizing the fuel. The pressurized fuel opens the check valve and is pumped into the fuel delivery pipe. The ECM controls the spill control valve to adjust the fuel pressure between 3.0 and 25 MPa (31 and 255 kgf/cm2, 435 and 3625 psi) and monitors signals from the fuel pressure sensor (for high pressure side) to maintain the target fuel pressure.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION If the fuel pressure (for high pressure side) decreases despite an increase request signal being sent to the fuel pump assembly (for high pressure side) by the ECM, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and store this DTC. MONITOR STRATEGY

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT NOTICE:
HINT: Read Freeze Frame Data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as Freeze Frame Data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, Freeze Frame Data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred. PROCEDURE
(a) Check around and beneath the vehicle for fuel leaks, fumes, etc. OK: No fuel leaks present.
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. (b) Turn the power switch on (IG). (c) Turn the Techstream on. (d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes. (e) Read the DTCs. Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes
HINT: If any DTCs other than P008700 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
(a) Has the vehicle run out of fuel in the past?
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. (b) Turn the power switch on (IG). (c) Turn the Techstream on. (d) Put the engine in Inspection Mode (Maintenance Mode). Powertrain > Hybrid Control > Utility
(e) Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher. (f) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Mode / Data List / Coolant Temperature, Injection Mode and Misfire Count Cylinder #1 to Misfire Count Cylinder #4. Powertrain > Engine > Active Test
(g) According to the display on the Techstream, read the Data List with the Active Test "Control the Injection Mode" set to Direct.
